Our Story

The central idea of our establishment dated back to the early 2000s, when the Vietnam Center of Research in Economics, Management and Environment (VCREME) was founded in 2005, becoming one of the most highly-respected private education centers in Vietnam for providing international-standard teaching in economics subjects. The Pre-Master & Pre-Doctoral Program at VCREME has helped thousands of Vietnamese students acquiring academic competencies in economics and enabled more than 200 young talents to receive offers and scholarships to study at prestigious universities around the globe.

In 2017, after more than 10 years and 30 programmes completed, a few scientists from the team wanted to expand the ambition to use science to benefit the wider Vietnamese society. With this central vision in mind, the Institute of Research in Economics, Environment and Data Science (IREEDS) was founded. Here, our new mission begins.

Vision of IREEDS

Institute of Research in Economics, Environment, and Data Science (IREEDS Institute) is a multi-disciplinary research organization founded by leading experts at major universities and organizations around the world. We strive to become an ecosystem of multi-disciplinary working toward a single common goal – promoting the sustainable development of Vietnam.

In order to achieve this goal, IREEDS pursue three strategic directions:

1. Establish a network of excellent scientists of multi-disciplinary expertise
2. Provide research outputs and lobby the uptake of robust scientific evidence in policy-making processes
3. Disseminate scientific knowledge and technology and provide technical assistance to support the wider Vietnamese society, especially disadvantaged groups

Between 2023-2028, IREEDS begins the second five-year strategic period with a strong emphasis on disseminating scientific knowledge and applications to the wider Vietnamese society. Particularly, we will set up the Regional Institute for Community well-being and Ecology (RICE), whose primary focus is on facilitating the implementation of scientific knowledge transfer platforms and technological transfer initiatives with local Vietnamese communities in three domains: (1) sustainable adaptation to climate change, (2) regenerative agroecology and (3) nature-based solutions.

IREEDS have built up a solid network of connection and information-sharing among researchers, practitioners, businesses and other interested stakeholders from various disciplines and backgrounds. Our network allows us, our affiliated members and external partners to quickly form expert panels to address specific issues relevant to the domains of our expertise.

Our extensive domestic experience combined with strong scientific competencies allow IREEDS to be an unique institution to provide a wide range of supports for stakeholders within our network in realizing their wish for contributions to Vietnam. Our supports range from technical, such as funding proposal preparation or fitting the project scope to the Vietnamese context, to scientific, such as expert finding, scientific consultation or data collection. We help our network stakeholders in designing and implementation of their plan.

As a private and independent research institution, IREEDS has a flexible and streamlined administrative structure, allowing us to take on the role of a hosting institution for both domestic and international experts, who are based in renowned universities and research institutions globally and whose works aim to contribute to the sustainable development of Vietnam. We assist researchers within our network with projects’ administrative, accounting and documentation works, for which we strictly emphasize transparency and accountability that must ensure national and international standards.

IREEDS scientific expertise spans the broad spectrum of theoretical and empirical economics, finance, environmental and natural resource management, bio-economics / ecological modelling, ecosystem services, biodiversity, natural-based solutions, remote sensing, data science (big data analytics, machine learning), not to mention the expertise of our ever-growing external network.

Furthermore, we have access to diverse sources of data in various domains, including social-economics, physio-chemistry-environmental and climatic data.

With the capability of conducting comprehensive and multi-dimensional research as well as the network of leading experts in economics, environment and data science, IREEDS has been continuingly contributing results to support public policy development. Particularly, we are proud to accompany our partners, AFD Vietnam on the GEMMES project (2022-2023), CNES on the project VietSCO (2021-2022) to promote and assist Vietnam in responding to climate change. Recently, we are the main partner in Vietnam for the CSIRO’s AUS4Innovation project on AI-platform for business and development.
