ADMISSION ANNOUNCEMENT
Preparatory program for Master’s and PhD scholarships in Economics, Management, Finance, and Data Science – July 2020
The Preparatory program for Master’s and PhD scholarships in Economics, Business Administration, Finance, and Data Science is organized by the VCREME Center with the following objectives:
- To equip students with the necessary quantitative research knowledge and tools to keep up with graduate and doctoral programs abroad.
- To assist students in finding schools and providing letters of introduction to find scholarships for studying abroad at the best universities.
- To introduce professors to guide and support research proposal writing for graduate students.
- In addition, all courses use curriculum from leading universities around the world and are mostly taught in English to help students become familiar with a dynamic learning environment and hone their language skills, helping them overcome language barriers when studying abroad.
I. ADMISSION ELIGIBILITY
Students who have achieved good academic performance from their second year and graduates of Economics, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Social Sciences, and Humanities majors, who desire to pursue studies in Economics, Business Administration, Finance, and Data Science.
Teaching faculty: 100% of the faculty are PhD graduates from prestigious universities abroad and are currently teaching both domestically and internationally.
II. COMPULSORY SUBJECTS
The compulsory courses consist of three subjects: Applied Econometrics, Econometric Theory, and Research Project.
1. Applied econometrics
This course introduces fundamental quantitative economic models and modern estimation methods (OLS, Maximum Likelihood, GMM…) for linear and non-linear regression models. Students will then practice with software (R/Stata) to analyze available data in cross-sectional (cross-sectional data) and panel formats to understand real-life issues in socio-economic life.
Lecturer: Le Van Chon (PhD University of Georgia, USA)
2. Economic Theory (Micro/Macro)
The course explains the decision-making process of the government, businesses, and consumers. Students will understand how they react to new opportunities and constraints and their interactions in the market. The course will use theoretical frameworks to pose practical questions, build and solve problems that we face daily.
Lecturer: Kien Le (PhD Lousiana State University, USA)
3. Research Project (On-the-job Training)
Compulsory requirement: Students must take the course Econometrics (by Professor Le Van Chon) and have knowledge of the software Stata and R.
The subject consists of two parts:
- In the first part: Students will be introduced to the general method of scientific research. Students will be assigned one scientific article in a prestigious international journal that is relevant to the topic they wish to pursue in the future. The instructor will help students understand the content, method, and perform the steps of data analysis (in that article) using the software STATA or R.
- In the second part: Students and the instructor will select and conduct one research project with data provided by the student, the instructor, or VCREME, with the purpose of applying the knowledge learned and writing a research working paper that is capable of being published in an international journal. This will help enhance the student’s CV to apply for further study or complete their doctoral dissertation.
The instructor will guide and a member of the scientific council of VCREME will approve this research paper. - The group of instructors: Luong Tuan Anh (PhD Princeton University); Mai Huu Minh (PhD University of Paris, Dauphine); Pham Hoang Uyen (PhD New Mexico State University, US); Le Van Chon (PhD University of Georgia); Toan Ngyuen (PhD Curtin University).
4. Elective course Data Science 101
Course 101 on Data Science introduces basic concepts of data science, current and future trends in big data. It provides an overview of data science platforms and processes, big data, and data processing. The following part introduces the programming language Python and its applications in data science. It covers the use and exploration of some Python libraries in data science, such as the Numerical Python library (Numpy), the Data Visualization library (Matplotlib), and the Machine Learning Algorithms library (Scikit-Learn).
Lecturer: PhD. Ta Quang Chieu, PhD and Post-Doc (computer science) at University of Tours, France
III. ELECTIVE COURSE – FOURTH SUBJECT
Students choose one of the following three courses as their fourth course. In case students want to take more than 4 courses, please indicate clearly in the registration form.
1. Optimization
The course will introduce fundamental mathematical tools of convex analysis and optimization theory used in microeconomics, macroeconomics, business management, and econometrics. Students will apply mathematical theory to real-world problems in economics and society.
Lecturer: Pham Hoang Uyen (PhD New Mexico State University, USA)
2. Statistics
The course introduces the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data. Students will understand descriptive graphs and statistics of categorical and quantitative variables, the probability distributions of discrete and continuous variables. These distributions are used to represent incomplete or uncertain knowledge about the reality. In addition, the course will present common sampling methods and sample distributions of estimates from a sample.
Lecturer: Pham Hoang Uyen (PhD New Mexico State University, USA)
3. STATA & R Software
Introduction to two of the most popular software programs today. Students will learn how to input or read data from other software programs; clean, process and analyze data according to the content of the Statistics and Econometrics courses.
Lecturer: Mai Huu Minh
►Tuition fee: 4 million VND/subject
IV. BENEFITS
- Being awarded a transcript upon completion of the courses trained to international standards.
- Students with good academic results will be helped by VCREME instructors to find schools, scholarships, write introduction letters and guide the writing of research outlines to apply for scholarships abroad, or write introduction letters to agencies and companies that students want to apply to.
- VCREME instructors will prioritize mentoring or introducing supervising teachers for students to complete their Master’s theses and Doctoral dissertations.
- Receiving support, guidance on procedures, and sharing experiences from VCREME students studying abroad. Students will be able to learn and consult online via video-conferencing with foreign instructors of VCREME.
